The country’s first carbon-positive hotel, which is slated to open in Colorado later this summer, is now accepting reservations for September and beyond.
The new hotel, named Populus, will have 265 guest rooms, two restaurants, flexible event spaces, a rooftop bar, a lounge and coffee bar and other amenities. Managed by Aparium Hotel Group and developed by Urban Villages, it’s located in downtown Denver, just steps from the Colorado State Capitol.

To achieve carbon positivity, the hotel plans to offset its operational carbon footprint with reforestation efforts and agricultural collaborations. Through these projects, it will sequester more carbon than the building emits during its entire life cycle.
Crews are also using sustainable design and construction techniques to help offset the carbon emitted throughout the building process—including emissions from transportation, maintenance and disposal of materials.

Already, Populus has partnered with One Tree Planted to plant more than 70,000 trees in Gunnison County, in the southwest-central part of the state. These efforts are also supporting biodiversity in the La Garita Wilderness by reintroducing Engelmann spruce, a type of tree that’s been affected by beetles.
“Populus is destined to become a must-visit destination for today’s modern traveler, a place that Denver residents are proud to have in their backyard and a landmark that redefines the future of sustainable travel with a commitment to superior service and an elevated guest experience,” says Mario Tricoci, CEO and founder of Aparium Hotel Group. “With dynamic amenities and a distinct reverence for nature, the hotel will foster connections between guests, the city and the environment.”
